Modelling of Solidification Microstructures

Résumé

This contribution briefly describes the modelling approaches that can be made for the prediction of microstructures during solidification processes. Due to the various scales involved in such processes, several methods must be considered. The phase-field method is capable of simulating the complex shape of dendrites and segregation pattern using a fixed grid. Cellular Automata (CA) can be used to predict grain morphologies and texture, taking into account nucleation, growth kinetics and preferred growth directions of dendrites. CA can be coupled with Finite Element heat flow computations in order to simulate grain structure formation in real components. A few applications of these various methods are presented.
